'Imaginary man'
As with their last album "VOID", the recording, mix-down
and mastering on the new album has taken place in TOKYO, LONDON
and NEW YORK.It is composed of the 12 songs. The very NaNa songs
are listed from the start of this album. These all have a strong
individuality, catchy and high quality. If the "VOID"
had been made using a lot of experimental approach, this "Imaginary
man" with considering of the same flow has moreover came
to the article that bring maturity. Among the Rock Music using
the beats of sampling, there are a lot of songs that don't make
you feel the temperature. But this music is quite very far from
that type of things. The broad dynamics and the sound like visualizing
image, the vocal has more presence as compared with last album.
The increasing persuasive power exists here.

'VOID'
In addition to all vocals being recorded in English, this awaited
first album opens up new musical avenues by laying down guitar
riff over a distortion beat. NaNa's sound with this new album
is overwhelming with a wide dynamic set of tracks backed by
a skilled use of computers and strong vocals that paint a distinctly
different color from anything else available on the Japanese
music scene. NaNa's music cannot be categorized as Rock or Popular.
It has a strongly individual flavor that is helping to chart
new directions in alternative rock. The recording track down
mastering process was completed by working with world famous
engineers in Tokyo, London, and New York. The dramatic sound
this union has produced has yielded a finished work that far
surpasses any ordinary first album release.

Chikako Watanabe(Vocal)
and Shigeo Tamaru(Guitar/Producer) came together to form NaNa
in 1996. NaNa's chief goal was to create high quality demo tapes
that would showcase their music to the world market rather than
limiting it to the Japanese market.
In the summer of 1997, the members sent an e-mail to the staff
of the Gut Label Internet homepage. This contact exposed Mr.
Ryuichi Sakamoto was to their sound. The vocalist, Chikako Watanabe
was picked to be a featured vocalist on Mr. Sakamoto's regular
radio program J-Wave Gut online. On this program five outstanding
producers including Mr. Sakamoto and Mr. Tetsuya Komuro worked
with Watanabe to create a completely new song. (The song "Red"
included in the maxi single released by Gut Bounce)
In September of the same year NaNa signed a Japanese distribution
contract with gut bounce, the Indies label created through a
collaboration between Tower Records and For Life's Gut Label.
Then they started recording their first maxi single. NaNa worked
with Mr. Bryan Burton-Lewis who has reputation for English language
lyrics from his work with artists such as Cornelius, Kahimi
Kalie, and Yen Town Band. In January 1998 NaNa went to the U.S.
and worked with the world famous mastering engineer Ted Jensen
who is well known for his work with artists like Garbage, Lenny
Kravitz, Pat Metheny, and Madonna. Their work was highly praised.
The maxi single "Red," released on March 15, 1998
went to #1 on the Indies chart after appearing in record stores
throughout the Tokyo metropolitan area including Tower Records
Shibuya, Shinjuku, and Ikebukuro outlets. NaNa's image as a
"world band" has been reinforced by their work with
Hideki Nakajima, the art director that put together their "cool"
album artwork and promotion video.
NaNa's "Song 5" included in the Red maxi single was
selected as the weekly recommendation song on J-Wave's J's Night
Future Trax in the second week of March. On March 22, the same
song appeared on J-Wave's Tokio Hot 100 countdown at #80 an
exceptional ranking for an Indies release. Based on positive
radio response NaNa signed a major label contract with For Life
Records / Gut label and started work on their major debut that
was released in October 1998. Clive Goddard, a London engineer
known for his work with Pulp, Sinead O'Connor, and Madonna among
others heard the demo tape and requested the remix. In October
of the same year the major debut single "Super Star"
is released. The second maxi single "Snake girl" is
released in January 1999.
The long awaited first album "VOID" is released in
February 1999.
NaNa performed first live as NaNa In September 1999.
They acted as a curtain-raiser of "SUEDE" JAPAN LIVE
at Akasaka BRITZ and played 6 songs including new songs. And
they also acted as a curtain-raiser of "Keziah Jones"
JAPAN LIVE, and besides they took part in a "ALOHA FESTIVAL"
presented ALOHA Productions in November the same year.
On Aug 2000 NaNa contracted with warner/east west japan. In
2001, they focused on recording for the new album and Live,
Event. On June 26, 2002, their second album "Imaginary
man" has released from "dream machine/east west japan".
As with previous album "VOID", the process from mixdown
to mastering of the new album has taken place in TOKYO, LONDON
and NEW YORK, and the mixdown by Clive Goddard, a London engineer,
the mastering by Ted Jensen, a New York engineer of Sterling
Sound. The picturesque music consisted of enhanced mature sounds
and songs shows the high-quality finish beyond last album. |
